DESCRIPTION

Allan King fonds [moving images: video, sound recordings, electronic records] 1967; 2002 - 2003

Allan King (1930-2009) was a Canadian director and producer born in Vancouver, British Columbia in 1930. After obtaining a BA from the University of British Columbia, King spent time in Europe and joined CBC Vancouver in 1954. King shot his first dramatized documentary, Running Away Backwards, in 1964. An early Canadian proponent of direct cinema, King’s 1967 documentary Warrendale won the Prix d'art et d'essai in Cannes in 1967. In addition to documentary films, King directed numerous television series episodes and dramatic feature films. King was the president of the Directors Guild of Canada in 1970-71 and from 1993-2000. In 2002, he was appointed an officer of the Order of Canada.
