Ali Adil Khan Bollywood fonds [artifacts, graphic materials, posters, photographic materials, sound recordings]; 1948-2014
Ali Adil Khan is a Toronto-based art critic, curator, writer, and collector. Khan has served as an advisor to the Royal Ontario Museum, the Aga Khan Museum, the Ontario Arts Council, the Canadian Community Arts Initiative, and the Art Gallery of Mississauga and has acted as a supporter of the 2022 and 2024 Karachi Biennale. He is the founder and director of the Shehla and Adil Giving for Arts (SAGA) Foundation and the South Asian Gallery of Art (SAGA). Khan serves as the Vice Chair of the Oakville Galleries Board of Directors and is a member of the Acquisition Committee of the Art Gallery of Mississauga. Ali is also a frequent contributor on Anokhi Life and Dawn.
As a collector and curator, Khan has organized and curated exhibitions in Canada and abroad. He has painstakingly built a noteworthy collection that includes Modern and Contemporary artists from India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, and Sri Lanka. Notably, Khan co-curated an exhibition at the Art Gallery of Mississauga titled Picture House: The Art of Bollywood in 2011 that featured many of the film-related materials in his collection.
This collection brings together a collection of Bollywood materials acquired by Khan. It includes sketches, showcards, canvas billboards, posters, photographs, and film soundtracks related to Bollywood films from the 1940's to the early 2000's. The gift comprises of over 75 original hand-painted and lithographed posters on paper from the 1940-2000 and 3 large billboards hand-painted with oil on canvas from 1965, 1971 and 1991, and several hand-painted show cards, lobby cards and rare behind the set photographs of actors, cameramen and technicians.
